Portland, Oregon in the year 2000 2007
Why did we choose Portland this year for our traveling exchange?
"The spotlight is on Portland...a major emerging player in roots-musicianship. It's about dancing, and community."
A bustling dance scene, hot spots to hang, and a general laid-back attitude -- this city has MezzJelly written all over it. So some eager locals hopped on the organizer team and now we can't wait for this event to get here!
You can join the locals playing and talking online at SwingOut.net, the Portland forums.

Transportation
Cars? We don't need no steekin' cars...
Tri-met is excellent. We have buses and light-rail trains running though Portland.
The Tri-met Trip Planner can tell you how to get from any place to any other place, plus how much the trip will cost. You don't need to give it addresses, either. You could ask for a trip from "airport" to "Pioneer Square" (that's downtown), and it will Do The Right Thing.
Max, the light-rail train, will get you from point A to point B for about $2.00 (airport to downtown for $3.99). To ride Max, you need to purchase a ticket before getting on with dollar bills (if they're perfect) or credit cards.
Buses are cheaper. Have some change on you; so you don't have to overpay.
The Airport
Portland International Airport 's abbreviation is "PDX". Locals frequently refer to the city by the same token.
The airport is small, clean, and easy to navigate. As with every other airport, Ground Transportation (buses, car rental agencies, taxis, Tri-met's Max, and the RAZ hotel shuttles) are just outside the baggage claim area.
Portland's excellent public transit system, Max (see above), can take you from the airport to downtown Portland in about 40 minutes. The airport is the end-of-the-line, so don't worry about hopping on the wrong train; it can't happen. A new train leaves every 10-15 minutes, so you won't have long to wait. What else? Let's see.. the ride will set you back $3.99. Buy your ticket before boarding the Max at the shiny silver ticket vend-o-mat. Piece of cake.
